Herd of Pere David's Deer
This is part of the herd that resides at WSRR. The antlers are still in velvet. The coats are winter coats. You can plainly see the distinct head shapes and eye shapes on the animals pictured here. The tail of the Pere Davids' is also quite different from other species of deer. The following picture is a common white tail. Compare the pictures to see the differences in the species.

A portion of the herd in spring
We had a very successful spring with many fawns and all are healthy. Whispering Springs is unique in that the fawn mortality rate is 0%.
Some of the preserves around the world have fawn mortality rates of up to 37%.
